The World’s Favorite Wombat, Patrick, Has Passed Away at 31

One of the world’s finest gentlemen has passed away.

Patrick the wombat, a beloved resident of the Ballarat Wildlife Park in Victoria, Australia, was adored the world over for his buck-toothed smile and winning personality. The 31-year-old wombat, reportedly the oldest bare-nosed wombat in the world, was also known for his size, weighing in at a whopping 88 lbs.

Countless zoo guests remember him as the furry ambassador that greeted them at the gates in his blue wheelbarrow.

On Tuesday, Patrick’s keepers wrote on the animal’s Facebook page that the wombat peacefully passed away, surrounded by loved ones. He is mourned by his 56,000 Facebook fans and all the animal lovers he made smile.

Patrick lived at Ballarat Wildlife Park for his entire life, arriving at the park after his mother was hit by a car. The zoo plans to erect a permanent memorial for Patrick in honor of the all the joy he brought to his home.

“We would like to thank all his friends and followers who have loved him and supported him as well as his keepers who have lovingly cared for him over the years,” read the post on Patrick’s Facebook page.

The page will continue on as a tribute to Patrick, and will now be full of photos of his fellow zoo wombats PJ, Coco and Banjo.
