In the message – left for documentarian Erik Angra, who was directing a film about Chyna’s life when she overdosed from a combination of alcohol and prescription drugs – the 45-year-old said, “I am doing much better.”
“It’s a beautiful day outside,” the seemingly upbeat Chyna told Angra. “All the sailboats are out today, it’s a beautiful day.”
She the noted her plans to go to a rehabilitation center in Malibu, near her Redondo Beach, California, apartment, saying, “I go for two weeks and drink cucumber juice and whatever, and swim around … I can get a therapy doggy the right way.”
Finally, throughout the voicemail, Chyna showed her compassion, repeatedly asking about Angra’s health, telling him, “I want to make sure you’re okay, and I’m here.”
“That voicemail, when I heard it, I was very excited,” Angra told PEOPLE exclusively. “She, for the first time, admitted she had a problem… Sadly, that was the last time anybody heard from her.”
In Wrestling with Chyna – tentatively set for release this fall – the star’s final months are closely followed.
“Her entire life she was searching to feel loved and feminine and beautiful,” Angra told PEOPLE. “She was one of the strongest women physically and emotionally in the sports world for the last 20, 30 years.”
The trailer features admissions for Chyna about her drug use, with her at one point stating, “If I need one valium, I take one valium. If I need three…”
FROM COINAGE: Chyna Was Planning Triumphant Return to Wrestling When She Died
Before her death, Chyna had ingested painkillers oxycodone and oxymorphone, as well as valium, nordiazepam (a muscle relaxant) and temazepam (a sleeping aide), according to the report from the Los Angeles County Coroner that PEOPLE obtained last year.
“I hope that people can see the signs of people who are going through addiction,” Angra said. “They look strong, and they look tough, but celebrities and artists are some of the most sensitive people in the world.”
