Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill’s Mission Impossible: 6 Was Filming Just Blocks Away from Paris Attack

Production on Mission Impossible 6 has been underway at the Grand Palais in Paris for the past week — just under a mile away from the site of a shooting that took place Thursday near a Marks & Spencer store on the famed Champs-Élysées.

Henry Cavill and Tom Cruise have been on set of the sixth installment of the spy franchise for the past week, but it’s unconfirmed whether they were present during the deadly shooting that took place just three days before France’s presidential election.

“The production was not affected,” a spokesperson for Paramount tells PEOPLE. “The production’s thoughts, like all of ours, are with the people of Paris.”

A local source tells PEOPLE that production seemed to resume less than an hour after the attack, as lights from inside the set were illuminated. The film’s director, Christopher McQuarrie, posted a picture on set at 6 a.m. local time Friday — around 9 hours after the attack — suggesting that filming had continued overnight.

Cavill also posted a picture to Instagram of himself on the Grand Palais set less than half an hour before the attack, commenting on the mustache that took the Internet by storm after McQuarrie posted a first look at the Justice League star and Cruise the previous evening.

Around 9 p.m. Paris time on Thursday gunshots were heard on the Champs-Élysées in central Paris, prompting passersby and tourists to flee the area in panic. One policeman was killed in the attack, two were critically wounded and a tourist was injured ‎in the crossfire. The gunman was also shot deal by authorities on the scene.

It’s unclear what motivated the incident, although French prosecutors have opened a terrorism investigation and many have noted its timing just days before the presidential election being watched all over the world.
