Ten months after Ailes abruptly exited his post at Fox News in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual harassment, he was in his two-story, $36 million, 12,747-sq.-ft. house in Palm Beach, Florida, when he suffered an accidental fall in his bathroom on the afternoon of May 10.
According to an event report obtained by PEOPLE and created by the Palm Beach Police Department, members of a local fire and rescue team went to the house after a 911 call saying that a 77-year-old male “fell and hit his head.”
Ailes was still on the floor when responders arrived. He remained conscious and breathing despite “serious bleeding,” according to the report. “He is not completely alert (not responding properly). The injury is to the head.”
A Palm Beach PD spokesperson told PEOPLE that Ailes was transported out of town after the accident, and it’s been reported that Ailes died of a blood clot as a result of the fall. The Palm Beach County coroner could not be reached when called by PEOPLE.
According to Zev Chafets’ 2013 biography, Roger Ailes: Off Camera, Ailes suffered from health complications for most of his life, after being diagnosed with hemophilia as a child. He also had multiple surgeries and joint replacements.
Ailes’ widow, Elizabeth, confirmed his death to Drudge Report on Thursday morning with a statement.
“I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning,” she wrote. “Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many. He was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise — and to give back.”
