Today, June 8, is World Ocean Day, a collaborative effort by numerous aquariums and conservationists worldwide to raise awareness about the pollution clogging our oceans and what we can do to protect these amazing environments and the animals that call them home.
Two of the aquariums who are part of this important initiative are the Georgia Aquarium and Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. As part of their ongoing work to make life better for the ocean’s inhabitants, the two facilities recently teamed up for a penguin release in South Africa.
In the footage above, provided by the Georgia Aquarium, you can see the magical moment a group of rehabilitated penguins are reintroduced to their home waters. The birds were found as chicks, stranded on the coast of South Africa, where the penguin population has taken a devastating hit due to numerous environmental factors.
To help protect these now-endangered birds, the Georgia Aquarium and Shedd Aquarium saved these abandoned animals and took care of them until they were strong enough to set out on their own.
