Katy Perry’s Witness: PEOPLE Review

With roaring empowerment anthems and explosive pipes, the superstar ignites a new round of fireworks.

For years Katy Perry has balanced big, chart- topping hits with more purposeful pop: It’s music for both good times and someday-better times. So her hypnotic — albeit “Hot n Cold” — new album includes not only the tabloid-fueling “Swish Swish” (allegedly aimed at Taylor Swift) but the feminist inspiration of “Hey Hey Hey.” For good measure she also indulges in frothy double entendre (“Bon Appétit,” featuring hip-hop trio Migos) and delivers a stripped-down breakup ballad, “Miss You More” — the real standout. It’s a bit of a grab bag, but Witness is worth grabbing.

Listen To:

“Hey Hey Hey” — Perry teams up with pop’s elite (hitmaker Max Martin coproduced, Sia cowrote) to deliver this swagged-up HBIC anthem. “I’m feminine and soft, but I’m still a boss,” she declares on the should-be single. Yes, ma’am!

“Miss You More” — She pledged eternal devotion to a lover on her 2013 Prism torcher “Unconditionally,” but this super-personal tear-jerker picks up where the flame fizzles out. “I miss you more than I loved you,” Perry sings on the sonic send-off, perfectly capturing a poignant post-breakup epiphany. “We were a dream, unrealistic / We didn’t lose, we didn’t win.”

Katy Perry’s Witness is out now.
