Texas Woman Allegedly Stabs 80-Year-Old Bus Passenger For Not Speaking English

A San Antonio woman, Reshunda Denise Pickens, reportedly stabbed 80-year-old Irene Murillo on a Greyhound bus for not speaking English, according to local news KCEN.

The 32-year-old was sitting next to the victim around 12:30 a.m. when Pickens started asking her questions. The older Hispanic woman wasn’t able to answer any of her questions because she did not speak English, as reported by the news outlet, then Pickens allegedly stabbed her in the abdomen and the back multiple times with a four-and-a-half-inch knife.

Another passenger allegedly intervened and pushed Pickens off the older woman. He held her until help arrived, according to Murillo’s family. “I was very upset yesterday,” Murillo’s granddaughter told KCEN. “If she wanted to hurt someone, she needed to go ahead and hurt somebody else – not my grandma. But, after talking to my grandma, we decided to forgive her.”

Murrillo’s granddaughter, who shares her name, drove her grandmother back to her home in Memphis, nearly 600 miles away from Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Waco, where she had been transported to. She has been in stable condition. Although in pain, Murrillo has allegedly forgiven her attacker. “She said she holds no hate against and told us ‘God forgive her because she didn’t know what she was doing,’” said the granddaughter. The family also added that the 80-year-old is afraid of traveling on airplanes. She prefers to travel by bus, but not anymore following the brutal incident. The family is planning to hire an attorney, according to the granddaughter.

Murrillo could not be reached, and PEOPLE is unable to determine whether she has a lawyer.

According to police records, Pickens was arrested, booked into county jail and charged with aggravated assaulted.
